For several years the cottage next door to ours has been basically vacant and falling apart, as one investor after the other bought and sold the property without ever using it. Over the past 10 years or so we have had the delicious feeling that the forest on that side of the property line was a greater part of the forest on our side.
But this year a "philanthropist" bought the property with the plan of building a new cottage for himself and his two grown daughters and their families. Early in the summer the dilapidated building came down, and sometime between labour day and last weekend, so did much of the forest.
The worst of it is that trees were beautiful, huge, old growth. In the picture below we place some coins on a stump to show perspective. (Just like archaeologists do in the movies!).
To be fair, they've only cleared back to about the same level as where our dense growth starts. But if was such a beautiful forest that it was sheer desolation to see it all gone. So sad.
