The 25 Pains of Kennedy Baines

The 25 Pains of Kennedy Baines, by Dede Crane

YA/Canadian/Realistic/Chick Litish

Kennedy Baines is 15. She has a disappointingly shy boyfriend, reckless friends who make her uncomfortable with some of their activities, two annoying younger siblings, a mom who just might have had an affair, thick ankles, unreasonable height, etc. But, she loves to sing, and she is obsessed with Pride and Prejudice. And then, her mom's college friend arrives to stay for a few days, with her 18 year-old, British son, who is just about the hottest person Kennedy has ever seen.
The story is told in what feels like an awkward 3rd person, as it is formatted around the listing of the 25 biggest "pains" in Kennedy's life. It felt like it should be in a confessional first person voice. But, the story was intriguing, loosely mirroring the plot of Pride and Prejudice, the main characters were sympathetic, and I enjoyed it. A light read, and likely to appeal to 14 and 15 year olds, but by no means one of the best of the year.
