Friendships : Stories, by Budge Wilson

YA/Canadian/Short Stories/Realistic Fiction/borderline Grim Lit

Friendships is, as you might have guessed, a collection of short stories about friendships. The stories are for teens, and the book was published in 2006. They are gentle, and true seeming. They are not didactic. They do not seem to preach. They tell stories of teens, mostly in Halifax. And the stories take place now and in the past. They are beautifully and caringly written. The characters display genuine feeling, and many of them do seem to grow even in the short time we know them. Some of the stories are uplifting. Some of them are sad. Some of them feel nostalgic. And therein lies the problem. It felt like I was reading something published 20 years ago. There was nothing new or edgy or exciting. Nothing that I had not experienced many times before. It just felt dated.

So, a comfortable read. But, not something to rush out and wait in line to get this minute.
