Beauty Returns

Beauty Returns, by Sylvia McNicoll

An author who lives in my home town!

Canadian/young YA/Realistic

Beauty Returns is the third and final book in a trilogy about Beauty a dog guide, and her first foster care giver and friend, Elizabeth. I have not actually read the first two books in the series(Bringing Up Beauty, and A Different Kind of Beauty), but I was easily able to catch up with the plot for this installment. The story is told in alternating chapters from the perspective of Elizabeth and her new dog Magic, and from that of Kyle, Beauty's new handler. Kyle is a high school senior who suffers from diabetes and has become blind because of the disease. Elizabeth is several years younger. They are not allowed to be friends, Beauty cannot maintain her strict dog guide behavior with Elizabeth around, and their friends and family disapprove. But, Elizabeth and Kyle find themselves helplessly drawn to one another. This is a pleasant and gripping character driven story of teen angst, dog love, human love, and the struggle to find one's place in the world. Nothing earth-shattering here, but quite a pleasant read. I think I will look up the other two books.
